I think that this is a good balance between a washable filter and a disposable one, and its storage profile is excellent compared to standard filters. The Future Way 14” x 14” filter arrived in a sturdy cardboard box with the eight compressed and individually wrapped accordion filters securely packed inside the plastic frame. My biggest concern when ordering these was how the expanded filters would stay expanded within the frame. That quickly turned into a fear that I wouldn’t be able to open the frame: despite clear indications about where it should open, I couldn’t get it to budge until I reached through the enclosed filters to push against the opposite side with my thumbs while pulling up on the outside of the lid with my nails. It takes some force to remove and replace the lid over the retaining strips. If there was an installed filter, I would have compressed it, but generally, I’ll only be opening the frame to remove a dirty filter, so I guess that’s okay. My original concern about keeping the filter expanded is well-handled by a retaining channel on each side of the frame, so the replacement filter is trapped open when the frame is closed. Installation was straightforward, though the new frame is slightly smaller and thicker than the old filter. There isn’t a place to mark the installation date, so I used a piece of masking tape on the side. I’ve used a reusable filter before (in a different house) and its biggest drawback was that it had multiple layers to wash and required a long time to dry while the HVAC remained off. Besides using replaceable filters, at 14” x 14”, this one is smaller and doesn’t have as much structure, so I can just wipe it down with a damp cloth before refilling and re-installing it. MERV 8 is a general residential filter that balances airflow with dust collection. It traps at least 20% of particles of 1.0-3.0 microns and at least 70% of particles of 3.0-10.0; if you have bad allergies or own a pet, you may want to consider a filter with a higher MERV value. Assuming this does a good job of cleaning the air, I recommend it because the benefits outweigh the challenges.

This filter set was straightforward to assemble and install. The frame is made of heavy duty plastic that’s easy to clean and fits perfectly inside my vent. Performance wise, these filters have a MERV 8 rating, which is the standard recommended for residential. It is good enough to filter out household dust, pet dander, and pollen while restricting less air flow so your HVAC doesn’t overwork itself. The thing to keep in mind of course is that the more vents you have, the higher the upfront costs and the less potential for space savings. There’s only 1 frame per pack, which is meant to be reused with the rest of the filters. This is fine if you only have 1 vent to maintain. But since we have 4 throughout our home, we’ll need to order 4 filter packages just for the frames up front and store the remaining inner filters as replacements. Whereas before, we would simply buy a 4-pack every few months, requiring no storage.

Additional elements do not seem to be available on Amazon…If I cannot purchase more elements, this is just more plastic I need to dispose.

I’m impressed with this design. The plastic frame is very sturdy. There are two specific points identified to separate the two sections. I found that you just need to pick one and start the separation there. The filter elements come in a neat little package. The filter element easily fits into the sides as described in the instructions (it’s also somewhat obvious). Storing these replacement filters will take up much less room. Per a question on the amazon product page, the manufacturer has not made replacement filters available on amazon although they note they will be.

I like that the filters appear to work well. It takes a little time to set up the frame, it did for me at least.

First of all, if you are like me and didn’t read through the product description very well, don’t be surprised when your 8 filters come in one small box. This is a great innovative design that allows you to reuse the plastic frame and replace the filter inside. It seemed difficult at first to open the frame, but when I realized all I had to do was stick my fingers inside the frame to pop it open, it popped open very easily!Mine fit fine. Not quite as snug as my previous paperboard filter but seems to work well. The product comes with 8 filters so it should last a while. It’s a great money and space saver but as of right now, I cannot find replacement filters for sale, so it may not be so friendly for the environment. Since this is a new product, I am hoping the company will begin making the replacements soon.

I just changed the first filter, it didn’t catch much, and had pulled up the sides. The replacement filters are too flimsy and I wouldn’t recommend these. I did like the filter holder, might try that with my other filters.20 x 20 x1 size.
